Portugal's famous traditional folk song Fado is a kind of Portuguese music with a history of 150 years. It can be heard in taverns on the streets, cafes and clubs in cities; the music expresses feelings of sadness, loss and pain. The special guitar sound and the soloist's unique accent are ethereal and moving, making the listener feel sad. Poetic lyrics are the essence of fado music. In the singing terminology of fado, there is the word saudade, which means desire. Like duende in flamenco, it also refers to the deepest soul of the singer. Without saudade, fado becomes self-pity. With saudade, fado becomes eternal sigh.
Saudade, maybe we will never truly understand in our lifetime what we have loved, been in love with, and what we have longed for.
