During the reign of Emperor Yuan of the Western Han Dynasty, Xiao Wangzhi died unjustly. His son Xiao Ji collected the whole story of the unjust case and recorded a volume of private notes.
The remnant slips live in the north, and are involved in the power struggle in the court, with murderous intentions approaching every step of the way. Xiao Ji and Shen Shu carried this truth and fled across the country. Along the way, they witnessed the strife of aristocratic families, displacement in troubled times, and the death of their companions one after another.
Against all odds, documents recording the true facts were sent to Weiyang Palace. The king understood all the grievances, but was restrained by the court's weighing and refused to issue a vindication edict. The officialdom was overthrown and the court changed, but this old grievance still could not be officially cleared.
The original palace eventually decayed and dissipated in the years of war. Fortunately, folk manuscripts have been circulated so that this past event sealed by the temple has not been completely destroyed.
Just because the truth is revealed does not mean justice will come. Some rights and wrongs can only remain in the human world.
Purpose: Truth does not equal justice. Those in power can understand grievances, but they will give up justice for the sake of power; official history can erase the past, but folk records can preserve human memory. 2.
