During the period of Emperor Taiwu of the Northern Wei Dynasty, the Rouran tribe fought with the Northern Wei Dynasty many times, and the Rouran leader and his consort died in the battle. The commander-in-chief A Gu advocated the war, determined to avenge his brother's death, and bloodbathed eighteen villages in the Northern Wei Dynasty; but Princess Duo Fei of Rouran was tired. Hua Mulan, a heroine of the Northern Wei Dynasty, joined the army on behalf of her father, and met Duo Fei on the battlefield. Both were attracted by the other's experience. During the melee, Duo Fei was captured, but Hua Mulan persuaded General Li Xiang to treat Duo Fei with courtesy, released Duo Fei, and persuaded him to negotiate peace with the Wei Dynasty. A Gu vowed to oppose the peace proposal and committed suicide in despair. Hua Mulan goes on a mission to Rouran, and she and Duo Fei perform a "Legend of Flowers" in which they transform from sworn enemies to sisters, and turn conflicts into friendship.
