He is self-respecting and subconsciously regards mysophobia as a symbol of aristocratic life.
So he thought he should be mysophobic, at least on the surface.
He has low self-esteem and actually hates contact with others from the bottom of his heart. He wants everyone in the world to stay away from him.
So mysophobia is such a good excuse.
