Mysterious “Gates” appear at random across Earth, dragging ordinary people into instances. Those who make it back alive gain a measure of power, equivalent to the Qi Refining stage in the modern world. The government establishes a Special Affairs Bureau, but knows next to nothing about the truth behind the instances. It keeps the matter under wraps, and the public dismisses it as an urban legend.
One day, the Gates stop closing, and the instance worlds merge with reality. Demonic beasts roam the streets, spiritual energy contaminates the water, and order collapses. The authorities are stretched to their limits, while a team that has never been officially registered begins operating under codenames.
