In Chang'an, demons and ghosts have never lived only in books of strange tales.
Deep in Xingshan Ward, there's an unremarkable “Demon Posthouse.”
By day, it finds lost things and delivers messages. After nightfall, it takes on problems the authorities won't handle and the living don't want to touch.
It finds people for ghosts, finds former masters for demons, and delivers letters from the dead that only the living can receive.
The posthouse manager, Pei Wujiao, hates trouble most of all and would rather not get involved.
Then a young helper named Atang arrives at the Demon Posthouse.
She's sixteen or seventeen, talkative, bold, and terribly curious. Strangest of all, she can always find things no one else can.
Lost cats, demons hiding in the “Boundary,” paths invisible to the living: she can stumble across them all.
At first, Pei Wujiao assumes she's just lucky.
Then he realizes that's not it.
Because some places are simply inaccessible to the living.
And Atang doesn't know that she's been dead for a long time.
It all begins with a two-tailed white cat, followed by a string of strange commissions.
Some people raise demons; others use them to do their bidding. Old arts that should have disappeared are beginning to resurface in Chang'an.
Pei Wujiao only wanted to run his business in peace.
But in the end, he must figure out two things.
Who's bringing these things back into the human world?
And why is Atang still here?
Theme: What truly defines a person or a living being is not merely their identity, origins, or how others define them, but their choices, memories, and emotions. Even in a world full of the supernatural, kindness, companionship, and understanding between people remain the greatest forces against loneliness and the uncertainty of fate.
