Synopsis:
The relationship between them was always hazy and ambiguous, impossible to explain or put into words.
*
The autumn of 2022, the opening ceremony at Shengcheng No. 1 High School.
Clear autumn sunlight spread across the entire campus, and the breeze carried the faint sweetness of apple trees. The athletic field bustled with people. As Zhao He approached the auditorium, she suddenly heard someone call out a name.
“Gu Mingqian.”
Zhao He already knew that name by heart. He was a senior, a prodigy in everyone’s eyes, with top grades and striking looks. On her way from the school entrance to the auditorium, she had seen those three characters countless times on the bulletin boards.
A green apple suddenly fell at her feet.
Zhao He looked up and unexpectedly met Gu Mingqian’s gaze.
On graduation day, Zhao He came to return the notes Gu Mingqian had lent her. She ran her fingertips over the pages, then wrote a line in the blank space at the end:
Gu Mingqian, the green apple tree is about to bear fruit.
*
Zhao He had always thought that the afternoons beneath the green apple tree, their shoulders touching, were the closest she would ever get to him.
