Direct inheritor of Meihua Dagu × Triple Crown-winning top-tier star and Best Actor
A century-old lineage of Meihua Dagu, two acts of perseverance separated by time, and the pure, unbroken sound of Meihua Dagu.
Song Yunshu is the present-day direct inheritor of traditional Meihua Dagu. Immersed in traditional performing arts since childhood, she is bright-minded and easygoing. Her technique is orthodox and her singing elegant. She has inherited her school's old styles and melodies in full, but refuses to simplify her singing or alter its rhythms for short-video traffic. In an age of fast-food Chinese-style performances, endlessly remixed and mastered overnight, she keeps to a teahouse on an old street, performing the music in its original form with cool composure, never chasing fame or glamour.
Everyone wants something new and quick. She alone remains faithful to the foundations of classical music, and is therefore dismissed by her peers as stubborn and old-fashioned. Her niche art has few listeners, and its transmission struggles to survive.
Lu Zhiyan, a triple-crown Best Actor, lives in the noisy entertainment industry, yet remains devoted to the sound of an old stringed instrument. As a boy, he happened to hear a fragment of a performance by Su Wan, a famous Peking opera singer from the Republic of China era. He became obsessed with it, and spent ten years searching everywhere for a traditional performer. One night, the clear sound of a drum drifted through an old street and finally led him to the voice he'd sought for years. He listens quietly and stays by her side, never using his capital to pressure her or tying her to the pursuit of fame. As a kindred spirit, he simply protects the passion she holds dear.
As Song Yunshu reads the manuscripts and journals preserved by her school, she gradually comes to understand the life of Su Wan, a fellow inheritor from a century ago. Su Wan's skill was peerless and she strictly upheld the old rules. She guarded the traditional form all her life, afraid to adapt, until the elegant music slowly faded into silence.
Across a century, two women of the same lineage: one bound by form, the other faithful to its spirit. Song Yunshu finally understands what it truly means to pass on a tradition: the foundations of the singing must not change, but the form of the stage can evolve with the times. She preserves the dignity of the old techniques while modernizing their presentation, letting the once-silent music of the pear gardens be heard again in a flourishing age.
One string carries us across the years; one song continues the lineage.
The purest passion, the gentlest understanding, and the long, enduring history of intangible cultural heritage.
Theme: Passing on a tradition is not an either-or choice. Art does not necessarily die in war; the restless impatience of a prosperous age and the tastes of fast-food culture can also slowly dilute the traditional art form. The best kindred spirit is someone who respects your passion, rather than trying to remake your art.
