Su Yan, an upstanding young woman of the 21st century, was the youngest Michelin sous-chef in nearly fifty years. But after a high fever robbed her of her sense of taste, she was fired.
Overcome with grief, she accidentally fell into the water and transmigrated into the body of an ancient cook.
She was also bound by a self-proclaimed God of Cooking System, which demanded that she earn good reviews from diners to get her sense of taste back. If she failed to complete the task within ten years or died before then, she would be erased.
At first, she planned to keep her head down at an inn for five years, winning over diners with innovative dishes.
But she never expected to catch the current emperor’s eye and be summoned to the palace as an imperial chef.
So be it, she thought. She could work as an imperial chef. But it turned out the emperor was a tyrant! The slightest displeasure sent him shouting for people to be beaten or executed.
Every other imperial chef was either flogged or beheaded. In the end, only Su Yan was left.
She trembled, constantly afraid she’d lose her head at any moment.
Then someone rebelled.
The tyrant emperor turned out to be all bark and no bite: he actually ran away.
Fine, he could run away. But why did he have to take a little imperial chef like her along?
Just as she was packing her bags to make a run for it, the emperor tearfully begged her not to go: “I can’t eat anything but the food you make.”
Su Yan: “You crazy emperor! This man-eating feudal dynasty! I want to go home!”
