On the day Ye Zhen returned to her hometown to take over the inn, someone was selling her cat at the door.
The cat was so thin that there was only a handful of bones left, and the blood it coughed up stained the bamboo cage red. The man knocked on the cage door and said that it would not survive the twelfth lunar month, so he sent it away.
Ye Zhen grabbed the cage and closed the door.
From then on, she took over a leaky shabby inn, and a house full of worthless residents: a little dragon that couldn't breathe fire, a fox that lost its fur, an eagle that was afraid of heights, and the black cat with a bad temper and the sickest one.
The other demons are responsible for boiling water, keeping accounts, and running errands. The black cat only needs to drink medicine, bask in the sun, and live well this winter.
But it gets smaller and smaller as it grows.
Ye Zhen was so worried that she tried to refill the recipe three times, until one night when she opened the door to the backyard, she saw a man in black standing on the well, with sharp eyebrows, blood on his lips, and golden eyes that were exactly the same as the cat in her arms.
She stared at him for a long time.
"Brother, who are you?"
