Lin Jianwei is twenty-seven and works as a property insurance investigator. She excels at finding the true cause of an accident amid the wreckage.
Su Jiming is twenty-nine and leads disaster-damage restoration projects. His job is the opposite: stop the water, tear things down, and make emergency repairs, restoring everything to normal as quickly as possible before the damage spreads.
They first met at two in the morning, at the scene of a severe water-damage incident.
Lin Jianwei blocked the wall scheduled for demolition. “This wall can’t be touched.”
Su Jiming glanced at the water spreading across the floor below. “You have twelve minutes.”
Everyone thought it was just an ordinary burst pipe caused by renovation work. Then, forty-six hours later, a second pipe burst in the same building, within the same water-pressure zone.
One insisted on getting to the bottom of things; the other was used to solving problems first. They kept meeting at the same accident scenes, while standing on entirely different sides of the issue.
Only later did Lin Jianwei realize that some things came with a complete chain of responsibility, but feelings never came with an investigation report that laid everything out clearly.
Su Jiming, too, came to understand for the first time that not everything broken should be replaced so you can move on.
