In the seventeenth year of Zhaonan, the Lord of the Soaring Stones, Zhao Li, traveled alone to Zhaonan to slay a great demon that stole spiritual essence. The demon vanished, but Zhao Li was gravely wounded and lay unconscious for years. When he awoke, he discovered that he had been cursed with essence theft. His spiritual power was gradually drying up, and his cultivation was declining. He wanted to die, but did not want to take his own life. So he returned to places he had once known, sought out old friends, and revisited the past, hoping that somewhere on this journey back through his memories, death would fall from the heavens and find him.
