Ye Xiu was a destitute young Daoist, so poor he couldn't even afford to stay in a ruined temple.
One night, he found a little green snake. It was emerald green, like jade, and curled around his wrist like a bracelet.
He offered it a steamed bun, but it wouldn't eat. He gave it water, but it turned its nose up.
He was so poor he had barely a copper to his name, but he gritted his teeth and counted out three coins to buy it some good tea.
Later, the snake took human form, dressed in blue-green robes. Its dark eyes seemed to draw him in whenever it looked at him.
Ye Xiu said, “I'm a Daoist, and you're a demon.”
The green snake coiled around his neck. “So what if you're a Daoist? When you fed me that steamed bun, you didn't ask whether I was a demon or a human.”
