Under the ruins of the earthquake, 17-year-old Shen Nian recorded 37 last words on an MP3 player. Seventeen years later, she listened to these recordings again and found that a male voice that did not belong to the scene appeared in one of them - "Don't be afraid, the moon is out."
She didn't remember the voice. She doesn't remember anyone calling her name, or anyone talking to her across the floor in the ruins.
But she has that passage in her MP3 player for seventeen years.
She met her younger brother who was asking about Gu Yuan for him at the old Beichuan station. She took a 2008 group photo from her class teacher at the teahouse. In the photo, the boy two steps away from her had a smile on his lips that she had never noticed before.
There was another person breathing in that recording, and she had forgotten it. She forgot that someone listened to her through the wall panel and finished recording all her last words. She forgot that someone used the last bit of strength to tell her that the moon was out.
Behind those sounds that she thought were just "her own voices", there was a heartbreakingly tender secret that she didn't know.
17 Years later, the voice found the forgotten person for her.
