She remembers him sitting behind her during her senior year of high school.
He talks little and never explains his actions. He passed notes, drew fried dough sticks, and steamed buns, and wrote "yes" on the back of the notes. He tied the jade pendant that he had worn for two years around her neck and said, "I gave it to you, and it's yours." He knelt down in the snow and stretched out his hand towards her, palm up, like a door that would not close.
"The parallels don't separate," he said.
She believed it.
Later he stood in front of her and said, "Maybe it's not me you really like."
She had no explanation. She put the jade pendant back into his palm, said "goodbye", then turned and left. She thought she was done with that journey. But she had been listening to that song for a year - "I gave you my heart, but why did you give me loneliness?"
