Eight people go together to catch monsters, and three pairs of lovers go to their deaths.
The Wangyue Sword Sect took on a tricky task of exterminating demons, and sent out three obscure sword cultivators: Senior Brother Zhou Qingyan who was gentle and fond of polishing swords, Second Senior Sister Mu Qingtang who watched the fun with a dog's tail grass in his mouth, and Junior Brother Qin You who had a vine growing in his sleeve and whose mouth was sharper than a sword. Along the way, they picked up Lu Xuanji, a legal cultivator, and Ji Lingxi and Ji Hanchen, brothers from the Fu cultivator, as well as Su Wantang, a junior sister from the Yao Sect, and Gu Chenbi, her boring gourd junior brother. Eight people came together and looked like a sect's grass platform team going on tour in the countryside.
At first the days were lively. Ji Lingxi sang an off-key song, Qin You was tangled in vines and jumped, Lu Xuanji squatted on the ground and smelled cow dung, and the old pangolin demon led the way and made people cry. They went to the ancient tombs, broke into the demon lair, and bargained with the weasel spirit. They had a lot of fun all the way, and accumulated a lot of worthless friendships along the way. No one thought about what happened next.
What happened next came very slowly, so slowly that everyone thought it would never come.
Later, Mu Qingtang rebelled, Ji Hanchen left, and something else lived in Zhou Qingyan's body. The plain white sword was stained with the blood of his fellow disciples, and the hand that had handed over the peace knot strangled his lover's neck. Su Wantang never knew until her death that the person she held dear to her heart had never truly treated her for a moment.
The good times are over.
Only the plain white sword was left, stuck alone under the old pine tree at the top of Wangyue Peak, with a long dead green and black vine wrapped around the sword. When the wind blows, the ends of the vines sway slightly, as if someone is fingering it with their fingertips.
