His piano scores are scattered in the corridor. The corners were curled and stained with dust, and the top page was stained with blood seeping from between fingernails.
He squatted down and picked them up one by one.
Someone on the fourth floor turned his back to him and stopped.
Later they walked uphill together for several years. The warmth in his hands was real, the days were really good, and he thought the most difficult days were over.
But some afternoons, once they pass, you can never come back.
