Verona has a wall. The walls are filled with letters to Juliet from all over the world.
When Lin Shu passed by, he casually took out one. The writer said that he saw an olive tree in Tuscany today and thought that Juliet should stand under it, "the hem of her skirt was stained with broken light."
Lin Shu is not Juliet. But he kept the letter.
He wrote a reply and sent it to Florence. The signature was "a person who replied to the letter."
He didn't know the other person's name, what he looked like, or whether the letter would be opened.
A few days later, someone opened a reply letter from Verona "from Juliet" on the table in the workshop.
They exchanged names, a fig leaf, a pressed white flower, and a piece of gauze that had been wiped on the image of the Virgin five hundred years ago.
Like restoring an old painting, slowly wiping out each other's faces from the dust and cracks. From a wall, to a tree, to an entire country.
Juliet may not write back, but "Juliet" will.
