The world is multi-layered. Each level thinks it is everything.
The lower layer is bubbles, which are bubbles condensed by rules. They float one after another and collapse one after another. The people in the bubble don't know that they are bubbles. They give names to the fragments - heavenly punishment, curse, divine wrath, doomsday - using up words to explain things they can't understand. When the bubbles are broken, new bubbles are born again, endlessly and endlessly.
The upper level is the only overworld. The source of God moves there, each with his own power and his own way. Each looks for a way to survive. They have seen each other, walked around each other, and fought with each other in secret. Every choice pushes or delays that common end, and no one knows which step is right.
Vientiane is the countless worlds. The divine order is that looming thing—older than civilization and silent than the gods.
Each roll of lights is lit by a different person. They don't know each other, they are at different levels, and they even live in an era where they don't know each other. Under everything, all light points in the same direction.
Someone lights a lamp above the abyss. The light comes on very briefly. The light travels very far.
