In the Great Northern Wilderness in 1970, the Hulan River was buried under heavy wind and snow.

Song Zhibai is the most silent one among the educated youth in the forest farm. The heavy burden of ancestral ingredients made her use all her vitality to fight against the frozen soil. Her hands full of cracks seemed to no longer know what pain was. The newcomer Chen Huaiyin, however, is like a fire that knows no bounds, plunging headlong into this black land with an old harmonica and full of unrealistic revolutionary romanticism.
Chen Huaiyin shoveled the crops, and Song Zhibai cleaned up the mess for her with a cold face; she was acclimated and had a high fever, so Song Zhibai took advantage of the night to hold the frozen corn buns tightly to his chest, and then handed them to her mouth when they were warm. Beside the haystack at dusk, the sound of the harmonica broke through the dead silence. It was the most vivid sound Song Zhibai had heard in so many years. They shared an old quilt in a leaky hut and secretly read "Anna Karenina" wrapped in brown paper under a kerosene lamp.
However, the cold wind of the times never favors the warmth in the corner. The "Team Clearance" wave swept across, and large-character posters were posted on the walls to mark their friendship as "abnormal." In order to protect Chen Huaiyin from being exiled, Song Zhibai pointed the sharp knife at himself and pushed her away with his own hands in full view of the public.
When the college entrance examination was resumed in 1977, Chen Huaiyin received a notice from Southern University. Song Zhibai stuffed the sewn broken harmonica into her luggage and said in the cold wind: "Go and run for your future." The train drove away in the vast white snow, leaving Song Zhibai to face the long cold winter alone.
Spring returned to the earth many years later, and Song Zhibai finally implemented the policy and returned to the city. At the train station in the provincial capital, Chen Huaiyin, who was once young and lively, stood there, holding the old but still bright harmonica in his hand. Time is a heavy millstone that crushes youth, but cannot erase the two girls spending the rest of their lives in the frozen soil.
Purpose: In a turbulent era of both material and spiritual scarcity, the secret and tenacious love and protection between women is the most precious glimmer of humanity in the desolate ruins. Love should not be obliterated by the times. It takes root silently under the frozen soil, waiting for spring.
