Documentary sound designer Lin Wanyin came to Lisbon for a forty-day sound residency. On the day of arrival, she mistakenly picked up a black suitcase and met Jiang Yuchuan, an international student studying shipbuilding and ocean engineering there.
Jiang Yuchuan is a semi-professional sailor, accustomed to calculating wind direction, speed and the timing of every turn of the helm; Lin Wanyin stands outside the camera all year round, recording trams passing the ramp, ferries crossing the Tejo River, and the unnoticed daily life of strangers. They were originally just two paths that intersected briefly, but gradually entered each other's lives through recordings, trainings and gatherings with friends.
The forty days are coming to an end, Jiang Yuchuan received a trial invitation from the French club, and Lin Wanyin also faced the choice of returning to Shanghai for work. No one asks the other person to stay, and no one gives up their original life for love. They only agreed to exchange a soundbite every day.
Thus, the sea breeze of Lisbon, the whistle of Lorient, the late-night traffic of Shanghai and the winter rain of Copenhagen passed through the time difference and arrived in another city. From the unspoken love, to the reunion across the mountains and seas; from the morning with two toothbrushes, to the common address with two people's names on it, they gradually understand that true love is not about who stops sailing for whom, but two people with their own directions, still willing to adjust the course again and again and get closer to each other.
This is a romantic encounter that begins in a foreign country and is about sound, sailing and growth. It is also a story about a group of young people looking for career, friendship and belonging in different corners of the world. The sea breeze never stops for anyone, but will send my thoughts to those who are willing to listen.
