On the day she transferred to another school, she walked past him, pulled out a chair and sat down, without even looking at him from beginning to end.
He thought she would look back. She never replied.
For the next three years, he got up at six o'clock every morning to steam buns for her, and ran from the second floor to the fourth floor between classes. She chatted with others on her seat and never stood up once. On the day we broke up, he said you wouldn't even come to me, but she didn't say anything.
Many years later he turned around on a foreign street and saw her standing behind him.
"When did you come?"
"I followed you when you ran away," she said, "but you never looked back."
"What now?"
She took a step forward: "Now I'm in front of you. Do you still want to run?"
He looked at her without moving.
She said: "If you don't run away, I will assume that you are willing."
He still didn't move. She stretched out her hand to hold him: "If you don't say anything, I'll take it as your promise."
He looked down at her hand: "You never held me before."
"It was the past," she said. "From now on, I will hold you by my side every day."
He was silent for a long time, then held her hand and said, "Let's go."
She asked where to go.
He said, "Go home."
"Going back to whose home?"
"Ours."
