East of England. A village. A church. A painting.
There is something in the painting, sitting on a high platform. There were things wrapped around his wrists and ankles, like chains or shadows. No one could remember who painted it, or how long it had been there.
Article 7 of the parish handbook is clear: Do not look directly.
Liam Ashford lived in this church for thirty-two years. He has memorized the rule, copied it, and taught others to obey it. He thought that as long as he didn't look at it, it wouldn't exist.
He looked.
He walked into the painting and saw a high platform, chains, and a mute being. Thirteen steps lead to four different eras - the Black Death, the Reformation, Victoria, and World War II. There is a line of words engraved on each step:
The chains are not iron. Chains are twisted by faith.
It took him half his life to walk up those thirteen steps. No chains were broken, no one was saved. He just sat on the edge of the high platform for a long time with a being who couldn't speak.
He didn't know that the waiting person was always there.
Just forgot. He himself is.
Demining: No CP · Serious drama · Slow pace · Open ending · Not a cool novel · Not redemption-oriented
Intention: Belief is its own shackles
