"Summer in Shishi Town"
Introduction
1980, Wubao Town, Shishi, Fujian.
The first time Yang Xiaodong met Wang Xiuqin was in her hardware store filled with screwdrivers, iron locks, and bicycle chains. She was sitting behind the counter, with two braids and a few pimples on her face. She was privately called "the ugly girl" by the people in the town. But Yang Xiaodong just thought she was good-looking, so good-looking that it made his heart beat faster, so good-looking that he was willing to fight Xu Hanxin, the best fighter in the school, for her.
The first fight happened because Xu Hanxin stuffed a dead mouse into Wang Xiuqin's schoolbag. Yang Xiaodong pushed him into the sand pit of the playground and beat him. The two of them were covered in dirt, and the dean's whistle blew to the sky.
The second fight was three years later. Wang Xiuqin was admitted to Pengshan Industrial and Trade School and was going to the city to study fashion design. Xu Hanxin blocked her in the alley and told her that she was an ugly girl and had no choice but to get married as soon as possible. Yang Xiaodong rushed out from the door of the hardware store, picked up a steel pipe, and beat Xu Hanxin's eyebrow bone to bleed.
After that fight, the whole town of Wubao was spreading the news: Yang Xiaodong had sex with Xu Hanxin again for the sake of the ugly queen who sold hardware.
Wang Xiuqin became a "harmful person" in everyone's mouth.
But is she really?
That summer was extremely long, and the cicadas chirped like they were about to break the sky. Yang Xiaodong stood in front of the rolling shutter door of the hardware store and watched Wang Xiuqin get on the shuttle bus to the city. She didn't look back at him. She held an admission notice from Pengshan Industry and Trade in her hand, her knuckles turning white.
He thought she would come back.
He thought that as long as he waited, she would always see the good in him.
But he didn't know that some people were destined to fly away. And he was just a cicada trapped in the summer in Shishi Town, calling her name hoarsely, but he could never call her back.
