During the Zhenghe period of the Northern Song Dynasty, Wang Ximeng, a painting student, and Zhong Ling, a soldier in the Xiang Dynasty, met while rescuing Li Shishi, the leader of the Bianjing Shangting Hall, and offended Wang Fu at the same time. Li Shishi introduced Zhong Ling to Yan Qing as his teacher, and cleverly borrowed a painting fan and a firewood lily vase to introduce Wang Ximeng and Zhong Ling to Zhao Ji, Huizong, and helped them enter the palace to accept their duties.
Wang Ximeng was personally taught by Zhang Zeduan and Zhao Ji, and finally painted "Thousands of Miles of Rivers and Mountains". He also met Zhong Ling's sister Zhong Qi because of his painting of ladies, and the two fell in love.
After Wang Ximeng and Zhong Ling entered the palace, they won the favor of Zhao Ji, which aroused the wariness and jealousy of Cai Jing, Wang Fu and other important officials in the court. Later Wang Ximeng was framed because of the Genyue stone carvings, and his father Wang Yubing also died unjustly because of it. At the same time, Zhong Qi was presented to the Jinren by Wang Fu, but fortunately Zhong Ling rescued him.
Wang Ximeng was so angry that he held a holy banquet and burned Jiying Hall. He was later rescued by Zhong Ling, Yan Qing and others, and everyone went south.
