Located in the southwest corner of Foggy Harbor, South Kenton Polytechnic is a fictional university known for its rigor, innovation, and caffeine intake. There are microscopes that work around the clock, confocals that are never scheduled, group meetings that are extended on time every week, laboratories with tight budgets but full of ideals, and a group of young researchers who jump back and forth between papers, experiments, mentors, deadlines, and life choices. Nan Xing originally thought that after entering South Kenton Polytechnic, she would live a life accompanied by white coats, incubators, beautiful data and the light of reason. Until she discovered that the most stable thing in the laboratory was not the cell state, but the four-hour group meeting every Wednesday morning; the most unpredictable thing was not the immune cells, but the next minute scientific research idea of the instructor. After repeated experimental failures, media crises, missing reagents, group meetings, and project restarts, Nanxing met Xu Zhiwei, a postdoc in the lab next door. Xu Zhiwei is calm, sober and beautiful. She is good at repairing instruments and saving cells. She is also good at breaking down a sentence of academic nonsense into three logical errors. She told Nanxing: Cell death is not necessarily caused by the will of the universe, but more often due to inactivation of reagents, confusing records and unclear experimental design. Nanxing thought she was just here to complete a master's project, but later she discovered that what she really wanted to learn was not how to feed cells, but how to maintain honesty, rationality, and the ability to love people in chaos.
