During the Yuanfeng period of the Northern Song Dynasty, Shen Tan, the daughter of a declining official, was sold to a carpenter's shop as an apprentice by her uncle because her father was falsely accused of corruption and was exiled and died of illness. She shaved her hair and bound her chest, assumed the pseudonym "Shi Sheng", and established herself as a man in the Zhao family in Bianjing.
A pair of hands covered with calluses can determine the outcome; a brain with a photographic memory can change the drawings of the Ministry of Works.
