In Suzhou during the Republic of China, time and space were torn apart by the coexistence of warlord warfare and the elegant music of Kunqu Opera. Gu Yanzhi forcibly projected his guilt and love for his deceased wife onto Liu Yunsheng. Liu Yunsheng soberly acted as a "stand-in", and with absolute reason and indifference, he was trapped in the favor of the powerful. The powerful were moved until their death, thinking that this was a deep love that spanned life and death; the actor was never moved in the end, and regarded this relationship as an excerpt that had to be performed.
