The first time Jiang Xin noticed Lin Yi was in the freshman classroom of high school.
The boy sitting in the last row was extremely quiet, as if he was afraid that his presence would disturb someone. Later, when they became roommates, Jiang Xin realized that some people were silent not because they had nothing to say, but because they swallowed all the words in their stomachs. Those who couldn't swallow became the dampness in the corner of the quilt late at night.
There was a wall between them that Jiang Xin could not see.
On the other side of the wall, Lin Yi was alone guarding a rotten past and a father who had never forgiven him. On this side of the wall, in Jiang Xin's sunny life, there is an additional shadow that he needs to lower his head to see.
He thought being close was enough. He thought that if the time was long enough and the temperature was high enough, he could pull Lin Yi out of the abyss.
What he didn't know was that some of the abyss were in the human body.
In his senior year of high school, Lin Yi did the boldest thing in his life - he confessed his love to Jiang Xin. That was the only time in his seventeen years of life that he reached out and reached for something. Jiang Xin held it tightly.
He thought this was the turning point of the story.
He was wrong.
Some things come faster than happiness. It doesn't knock on the door or give warnings. It just strangles your neck from behind on an ordinary evening and drags you into a corner from which you can never go back.
Lin Yi failed to take the college entrance examination.
He didn't survive that summer either.
Jiang Xin made a decision a year later. Everyone said he shouldn't, but he went anyway.
No one knew that was the last time in his life that he would do what he wanted to do.
And this time, he finally didn't look back.
