At six o'clock in the morning, the old-fashioned iron lock clicked, locking six-year-old Lin Wan in an empty bungalow. The fear of waking up from the nightmare and the helplessness of banging the wooden door finally condensed in her eyes as she looked at the rusty window. With her bleeding hands, she pried open the latch of fate for the first time, thinking that crawling out would mean freedom. Little did she know that this was just the beginning of a long "escape".
Over the years, she was like a ball that was kicked randomly, looking for a place that would not lock her in the broken family relationships. Grandma's old bungalow, my mother's "home" full of words, my father's new home where he easily broke his promise to register his younger brother... Every time he gets closer, it is accompanied by deeper disappointment. In her senior year of high school, she carefully planned a "defection" to join her estranged father, just to have "the first room of her own in life" and a door that could be closed. However, the calculations of the adult world are silent and cold. When her father asked all her relatives to take turns to persuade her to leave in order to change to a new house with only two bedrooms, she finally understood that her true belonging could not be prayed to outside.
This is a story about scars, escape and reconstruction. See how a girl, with the fear of being locked up in her childhood, learns to transform the strength to "escape" into the courage to "put a bolt on herself" amidst repeated brokenness and betrayal. She went from longing to be taken in to eventually building a country that was impervious to rain and wind.
