When Xia Zhi was four years old, she moved into an old street full of yellow jujube trees.
A head poked out from the wall of the next courtyard. A dark and skinny little boy with one front tooth missing took out an orange candy from his pocket and handed it to her.
"Please eat candy. You will be my friend from now on."
Shang Jiayou is good at everything except his mouth. He teases her, annoys her, and bickers with her every day. When she gets mad, he smiles and hands her a bowl of ice powder. Xia Zhi said he hated him, but in her heart she had long been used to the bag of milk he waited for her at the alley every morning and the ribs he put in her bowl at lunch.
Wen Yue is Xia Zhi's best friend. She is quiet and sees things through without saying anything.
Fang Bai is the brother brought here by Shang Jiayou. He doesn't talk much, but he remembers everything.
The four of them walked from the candy shop in the old street to the gate of the university, and from the bluestone road to the ginkgo tree in Beijing. Noisy, separated and reunited, but never separated.
