The smoke from cooking under the jujube trees, the morning dew in the medicine patch, and the wet ink in the study have replaced the bloody fire at Jianmen Pass and the beacon smoke at Yingkou. In the past, old friends brought peppercorns, fishermen's songs and hydrological notes from all over Kyushu. My daughter Guining grew up among maps and medicinal herbs. She used bamboo rulers and charcoal strips to trace the mountains and rivers her parents had traveled, and also drew her own path.
