Shen Du is the most "respectable" poor student in the town.
She uses a mottled thermos cup to contain self-esteem that no one knows about. She hated the rich kid who always tried to overwhelm her with "likes", and even more disgusted with the town from which she struggled to escape.
Zhuang Hu is "the one at the end of the town".
Her silence is a fortress. She looked at Shen Du as if she were looking at a mirror that was too smooth but rusty inside. They share a storage room.
