When Lin Rulan was ten years old, her parents died in the line of duty and she was adopted by the Shen family.
When Father Shen was alive, she could still eat hot meals. After Shen's father died, she and her second brother Shen An became the "trailers" of the eldest brother's family. Not only did they work as cows and horses for them, but they were also bullied by their nephew Shen Jingting.
