This work is set during the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty, and takes the life of the fictional Jinshi Zhao Ying as the main line. Through his imperial examination struggles, love entanglements, scholar-official friendships, hometown life and official ups and downs, it shows the spiritual world and life picture of the Jiangnan scholar-bureaucrats in the middle and late Ming Dynasty. The story is symbolized by the plaque on the fourth archway of Xinghua with the words "Sen Ping Tong Di", which connects a moving chapter of how traditional scholars seek a balance between ideals and reality, family, country and individuals.
Through the life of a fictional Jinshi, it shows the spiritual world and living conditions of scholar-bureaucrats in the Ming Dynasty, and explores the ideal pursuit and practical dilemma of traditional Chinese intellectuals. The story is not only an epic of personal growth, but also a microscopic mirror of an era. It ultimately focuses on the eternal thinking of "what is a successful life" - plaques of fame will eventually fade, but sincere emotions, firm beliefs and spiritual inheritance are the real "equal equals".
