In ancient Western legends, mermaids are the souls of oceans and lakes. They are beautiful and mysterious, possessing enchanting songs and the ability to foresee the future. There is a story among sailors: on stormy nights, mermaids will guide lost ships to find a safe harbor; but when humans chase them greedily, mermaids will also set off huge waves, and those who are greedy will be buried at the bottom of the sea.
The Little Mermaid in Andersen's novel sacrifices for love and turns into ocean foam; the Sirens in Celtic legend lure sailors to destruction with their songs. These stories have been passed down from generation to generation in the towns around Emerald Lake, and children are taught to respect the mysterious power of the waters of the fort, because no one knows how much truth there is in the legend.
Until that summer, the legend became reality.
