Set against the backdrop of the troubled times of the Republic of China, "Burning in Love" tells a tragic story of destruction and despair among the actor Xie Ci, his adopted brother Shen Si, the drugstore owner Fu Xun, the gentle Lu Zhen, and the paranoid and ruthless Gu Tingjian.
Xie Ci is a well-known opera actor in Jinmen. He was adopted by Shen Si since he was a child. The two are deeply affectionate adopted brothers, relying on and protecting each other. Shen Si and the drugstore owner Fu Xun fell in love with each other and were each other's staunchest support; Xie Ci fell in love with the gentle and considerate Lu Zhen, and they warmed and redeemed each other in the turbulent years.
The powerful Gu Tingjian had an extremely paranoid, almost pathological love for Xie Ci. When he could not get Xie Ci, he decided to destroy it with his own hands, making him his own forever. In order to cut off all the warmth and retreat around Xie Ci, Gu Tingjian secretly set fire to Shengping Tower and turned it into a sea of flames. In order to protect his adopted brother, Shen Si resigned and resolutely fell into the flames. He was eventually killed in the sea of fire and completed the final protection with his life.
After losing his adopted brother, he fell into endless grief, but Gu Tingjian's madness did not stop. In the end, he killed Xie Ci, secretly poisoned him, and personally poisoned the person he loved deeply but wanted to destroy. He thanked her and died with hatred. Lu Zhen lost his true love and spent the rest of his life trapped in longing and despair.
Although Gu Tingjian survived, he forever lost the person he wanted to have, and spent the rest of his life in endless emptiness and obsession. Fu Xun was devastated by the loss of Shen Si, and was no longer happy at all.
A raging fire and a poisoning burned away the prosperity of the stage, as well as all the warmth and hope. The story tells of the involuntary joys and sorrows in troubled times, the paranoid and twisted love, the deep affection that protects each other with life, and the despair and regret that can never be restored.
