"Winter on the Dnieper River" is set against the background of the Ukrainian War from 2023 to 2026. It tells the transnational story of Chen Yang, a young man from Liaocheng, China, who went to study in Kiev and met and fell in love with the Ukrainian girl Katya during the war. The two supported each other in the difficult daily life of air raids and material shortages, and their love gradually grew. Chen Yang also integrated into Katya's family and met her brother Alyosha who stayed on the front line. Alyosha's sacrifice made the family deeply saddened, but it also made the relationship between the two stronger. The war stopped slightly at the end of 2025, and Kiev gradually ushered in the dawn of peace. In 2026, Chen Yang returned to Liaocheng with Katya. The two held a national wedding in the ancient city, and their daughter Nastya was born soon after. Now they have settled in Liaocheng, watching the fireworks by the canal every day. Although they cannot return to Kiev often due to the ongoing war, they are always with Katya's parents. With thoughts of Alyosha, they look forward to the complete end of the war, to be able to cross the mountains and seas to reunite with their relatives, so that both sides of the Dnieper River and the canal can welcome the spring sun of peace. The novel explains the evils of war and the value of peace, praises the tenacity of love and the light of humanity in the flames of war, and also depicts the blending of transnational cultures and the longing for home across national borders.
