"California Villa" tells the story of two wandering souls in middle age who meet in a foreign country, illuminate each other and start anew.
Lin Wei, a 45-year-old Shanghai architectural designer, has a successful career but is tired inside. Under long-term high pressure and emotional emptiness, she went to Santa Cruz, California alone, renting a beachside villa for a month in an attempt to "relax" and sort out her life. The owner of the villa, Jack, is 50 years old. He was a photographer for National Geographic. He sealed up his camera due to trauma in the war and the breakdown of his marriage. He lives alone on the beach and keeps distance from the past.
The former shared tenancy relationship has become the starting point of a new chapter in life. The story explores rebirth in middle age, loneliness and connection, and how people redesign their lives and love in different cultural backgrounds.
