Ten-year-old Zhang Jun was kicked out of the house late at night by his father, a teacher, because he failed in an exam. In the deserted campus, he saw three little black men holding hands, jumping up the wall and disappearing. Seven days later, Zhang Jun suffered from a binge eating disorder. After eating three large bowls of rice, he suffered from stomach bleeding and was in critical condition. The desperate father found "my second uncle" who was watching things in the village, and found out that the three little black men were "passing ghosts" who had been in the mass graves for decades...
The story takes place in a first-class village by the Haihe River in Tanggu. The village primary school was built on a mass grave before liberation. The elders said that the evil spirit of too many people who died in this area was suppressed by the sound of children reading in the school. The rule of "nurturing the Yin with popularity" left by the wandering Taoist priests was passed down from generation to generation until it was broken that night.
This is a story about childhood memories and folk taboos, and also a generation's collective review of local rules. At the interface between science and superstition, between the visible and invisible worlds, the awe passed down by the older generations may be the final boundary between us and the unknown.
