Before she died, Madam Wang of the Wang clan called her only daughter to her bedside and left her these final instructions: “Take the marriage contract and go to Mount Min at once to find the head of the Fu clan. His tongue may be sharp, but he's a decent man. He has a son about your age. When you marry into the family, you may have to put up with some noise, but at least you'll have a peaceful life.”
Mount Min
The head of the Fu clan also called his son to his side to make arrangements for after his death. “The Wang family's eye for men may be poor, but they certainly have their merits. Their daughter is as beautiful as an immortal. If you marry into her family, you may not amount to much, but at least you'll live to a ripe old age.”
The day Mu Wushuang arrived at the Fu residence after traveling across mountains and rivers, mourning banners hung for miles around Mount Min. Her fiancé, dressed in mourning clothes much like her own, was being driven out by his clansmen.
They were both equally miserable, like looking in a mirror.
Mu Wushuang: ...
Fu Lincang: ...
Fate had other plans. Both their worlds collapsed that day, and the pampered treasures of their families became two helpless strays.
With no one to rely on, they were useless at both manual labor and practical work. To stay alive, they could only trail after their clansmen all day, picking up whatever they didn't want.
They lived like that for three years.
Mu Wushuang had had enough.
When her hard times finally came to an end, all she wanted was to treat herself.
Fu Lincang was different. Terrified of poverty, he devoted himself to making money without end. One day, he got into a fight with a newly appointed top scholar from a prominent clan and demanded, “Where did you get that earring?”
“I found it.”
Did he think Fu Lincang was blind? It was the very earring Mu Wushuang had worn the day before.
Members of the two great clans swarmed around and blocked the palace gates. Mu Wushuang, the key figure in the whole affair, was summoned to the heart of the storm.
After hearing her say, “I gave it to him,”
Fu Lincang didn't notice that he was smiling like a ghost. He composed himself, straightened his clothes, and reminded her word by word, “Clan Head Mu, we built our lives from nothing together. You said we'd share honor and disgrace from then on. Now, even if you give a single stitch or thread to a stray cat or dog, some of it belongs to me, your husband.”
He had every right to make them spit it out.
