It tells the story of Pan Junyu, a strange woman from the Ming Dynasty who disguised herself as a man for the sake of her family's mission. She became the top pick in high school with her astonishing talents, and her legendary career from the Hanlin Academy to guarding the border in Liaodong, and finally to the chief minister of the cabinet. Her marriage to her wife Wang Jingshu began with a marriage out of which she had no choice. On their wedding night, she turned around and left under the pretext of studying hard. Three years of correspondence between her and her wife hid all her unspoken thoughts. From Suzhou to the capital, from alienation to frankness, from the promise of "waiting for the magnolia to bloom" to the vow of "live in the same quilt and die in the same hole", the two of them used a pair of magnolia hairpins as their trust to protect their deep love across genders amidst the strict ethics and court affairs. They stayed together through thick and thin for forty years, experienced honors and disgrace together during life, and were buried together and slept together after death, leaving behind a life-and-death relationship that was revealed by archeology and shocked future generations.
