In high school, Zou Man was like a string that was always tightened and never dared to relax, and that budding good feeling was treated as an over-the-top question and shelved cautiously.
Later, when they met him again and got along briefly, a possibility emerged between them.
Reunited after adulthood, the silent strings were quietly plucked. Until a rainy night, she saw him sending another woman downstairs with her umbrella tilted towards her and her smiling eyes gentle.
She turned around and walked away, her heels hitting the wet ground with a sharp and shattering sound. After taking a few steps, his wrist was grabbed from behind.
"Zou Man." His voice was cold as rain.
She didn't look back, her back was straight, only her shoulders were shaking slightly. Wanting to shake it off, he held it tighter.
"It's not what you think." He tried to explain.
"You don't need to tell me." She finally spoke, her voice hoarse, and every word seemed to be forced out of her throat, "We... Have nothing to do with each other. I have something to do, so I'll leave first."
Just these words seemed to have taken away the last bit of strength from her. The dignity that she had held up was completely broken, and she just lowered her head, tears hitting the ground before the rain.
He was silent for a few seconds, then put his arm around her shoulders, turned her around, and brought her into his arms. The familiar fragrance of soap locust mixed with the smell of rain enveloped her. She pressed her forehead against his shoulder and finally stopped resisting, just crying so hard that she couldn't make a sound.
He put his palm against her soaked back and whispered against the tip of her ear:
"Do you know you are wronged now?"
She shook her head, but her tears became even fiercer.
"Okay." He tightened his arms, "I hope you will be wronged. I have been waiting so that you can be wronged for me."
The strings that had been tense for many years finally made a clear and trembling reverberation at this moment.
