In 1997, ten-year-old Shen Yubai heard the name - Gu Yanzhi on the radio for the first time in the salty sea breeze at the fish market pier in South France. Gu's eldest grandson in the clouds, a genius at Cambridge, is separated from him by a sea of noise.
For the next sixteen years, Shen Yubai struggled to survive at the bottom, but used the humblest way to collect all the fragments of Gu Yanzhi: footnotes in papers, anonymous poems, and the secret behind an old scar. In the letters he will never send, he draws a sea that can be "heard" for a person who may never know his existence.
In the winter of 2018, a shipwreck pushed Gu Yanzhi into the abyss. Shen Yubai finally pressed the send button and encrypted the eight-year silent monologue. Forty-eight hours later, he received a piece of parchment written in shipwreck teak ink:
"Sunday three o'clock in the afternoon, Shek O Hok Tsui Lighthouse. If you want to see the light."
