"The Story of the Burning Lantern" tells the story of the life-and-death love between a fisherman girl named A Lian (formerly known as Lian Mei) and the water-bound spirit Jiang Sheng. Seven years ago, Lian Mei accidentally rescued Jiang Sheng from the river and learned that he was the soul of a scholar who stayed in the river because he did not want to harm others. The two met on the seventh day of every month and gradually fell in love. Jiang Sheng was gentle and knowledgeable, and taught Lian Mei how to watch stars and make wine, while Lian Mei used human fireworks to warm his long loneliness. However, when Lian Mei was besieged by a group of ghosts while trying to save a child who had fallen into the water, Jiang Sheng died trying to protect her. From then on, Lian Mei changed her name to Ah Lian, and used blood as a guide to set off river lanterns every month to attract souls, hoping to reunite Jiang Sheng's soul with the power of thousands of lanterns. After seven years of hard work, even though Jiang Sheng appeared to dissuade her, Ah Lian remained persistent and did not regret it. She vowed to wait for the elusive miracle for the rest of her life.
