In the cold winter of 1969, six educated youths from Beijing, including Ding Zhe and Sun Li, bid farewell to the city and rushed to join the queue in the barren Tiandudu Village in northern Shaanxi. From the ignorance and discomfort when they first arrived, to facing the many tests of life, labor and emotions, they experienced food shortages, dam collapse, class turmoil and other tribulations, and also learned about simplicity and perseverance through daily interactions with the folks in northern Shaanxi.
The educated youth brought new culture and new ideas, and they transformed and grew up on the yellow soil: Ding Zhe transformed from an ideal young man to a pragmatic and responsible leader, Sun Li grew into a "cave doctor" who protects his neighbors, and the naughty Dunzi learned responsibility and gratitude. Some of them dedicated their lives, some of them stayed firmly rooted, and some of them traveled to distant places.
During these years, an unbreakable will was built up, and a friendship that was thicker than water was forged, which became a spiritual wealth that spanned half a life. Looking back thirty years later, the loess and friendship in northern Shaanxi are still the hottest imprints in their hearts.
