Lu Zhiyao had an English name called Emily when he was a child, but after studying in the United States, he adopted the pinyin name. When Americans pronounce Zhiyao, zhi becomes a harsh zee, while yao is even weirder. They pronounce the sound ye from deep in the throat, and the remaining ao is slowly squeezed out from bottom to top through the vocal tract, slides across the roof of the mouth, and is finally released.
