On the first day of school, on the bus from the New York airport to school, two high school students met by fate - Gu Ruoyang, a Chinese international student with a heavy science textbook; Anthony, a California student with hip-hop music playing in his headphones. They soon discovered that the two were not only classmates but also roommates for the next three years.
Gu Ruoyang, a genius in science, had excellent English scores in China, but when he arrived in the United States, he found that real English outside the classroom was completely different. He is calm and reserved, and is accustomed to using mathematical logic to solve problems, but he often feels at a loss in an unfamiliar cultural environment.
Anthony, an authentic New York student, barely passed math, physics and chemistry, but he knew all the rules of American high schools - from how to communicate with teachers to which clubs to join to make it easier to apply for college. He is outgoing, outspoken, and good at sociability, but he always struggles in science classes.
These two seemingly unrelated people reached an agreement in the dormitory: Anthony would help Gu Ruoyang truly integrate into American campus life, and Gu Ruoyang would help Anthony improve his science scores. Over the course of three years, they became each other's most important supporters as they faced culture shock, academic pressure, identity, and all the confusions of adolescence.
After graduating from high school, Gu Ruoyang returned to China and was admitted to the People's Police University of China with excellent overall results; Anthony entered the University of California, Berkeley, with his significantly improved science scores. Although they took different paths, they both learned from each other the ability to change their lives - one learned to take root and survive in a strange environment, and the other learned to face the future with reason and logic.
This is a story about how two high school students with completely different backgrounds helped each other grow into better versions of themselves over three years, and finally realized their ideals.
