Under the locust tree in the south of the Yangtze River, Lin Wei waited for Chen Yu for three autumns.
When the rain fell that year, he picked up new leaves and stuffed them into her palms, saying, "When the locust leaves are green again, I will accompany you to see the green mountains." After that, he rode off to Chang'an, and it was a farewell.
She guarded the courtyard full of dry locust trees, wrote and burned letters, read and memorized the promises, from "There is snow in Chang'an" to "the locust leaves turn into mud". Later, she walked alone through the green hills he mentioned, but the locust trees he mentioned could not be found in the mountain mist; she walked through the fallen leaves in front of the steps several times, and each one looked like the one he had left behind, but no one smiled and brushed the broken leaves off her shoulders.
The rain has fallen for three years, and the leaves have returned for three seasons. Only the person who said he would wait for the leaves to turn green again was forever trapped in the wind and sand of Chang'an and never came back.
The fallen leaves all over the stairs eventually turned to ashes, and the person she was waiting for, as well as the unfinished sentence "I like you", were buried in the cold rain in the south of the Yangtze River with the last locust leaf.
