The novel unfolds from Lin Xiao's perspective, from the triangular entanglement between Zhou Ming and Su Qing when they first met Zhou Ming and Su Qing during high school military training, to the secret relationship with Chen Yu when they were studying agriculture, to the reunion and relief at the class reunion as an adult. The time span extends from 2002 to 2019. Lin Xiao has always been a bystander and participant in the story - she once wrote a three-page "moral message" for her friend Su Qing, but unexpectedly revealed the cruel truth of youth; her and Chen Yu's notes and soda exchanges became short but bright stars in each other's lives; and as an adult, she is still looking for that "unfinished conversation" in the bookstore and in the stability of her marriage.
